Varilux Physio Extensee Progressive Lenses: Seeing More, With Less Effort

We were recently invited to the launch of Essilor’s Varilux Physio extensee progressive lenses - a new innovation built around a very important but often overlooked part of your vision: the pupil.
The human pupil is dynamic. It constantly adjusts to different lighting conditions - changing up to four times in size(3) — allowing us to adapt quickly in less than a second(2).
This remarkable ability to vary in size and adapt to light is influenced by numerous factors, creating unique pupil responses for each individual.
Varilux Physio extensee is the first Varilux progressive lens developed using a dynamic replica of the human pupil, aiming to deliver high vision intensity in any light(1).
Within the surface of the lens is also integrated Dual Booster lens surface technology, to experience high quality of vision at near, and aid with fine print.
The new lenses also feature the Synchroneyes Lens technology: fully binocular design to provide wider field of vision.
What That Means for Wearers
Your eyes rely on sharpness and contrast to see well. Sharpness helps you detect fine detail, while contrast allows you to distinguish subtle differences in similar shades of colour. For progressive lens wearers, especially those frequently switching between lighting conditions, maintaining this clarity can be a challenge.
According to Essilor, this new lens design improves both. Varilux Physio extensee makes more visual information accessible, helping wearers see more — and enjoy more — in everyday life.
Backed by an in-real-life consumer study involving 79 progressive lens wearers in France(1), the lenses are designed to perform well across lighting environments, from dim indoor settings to bright outdoor conditions.
Our Takeaway from the Launch
As a team committed to offering the best lens solutions to our clients, we were excited to learn about the science and real-world benefits behind the new Varilux Physio extense. We appreciate that this lens goes beyond standard progressive designs — factoring in the natural response of the human pupil to provide sharper, more comfortable vision throughout the day.
We’re particularly interested in how this lens might help wearers who:
-
Work in mixed lighting environments
-
Have higher sensitivity to contrast
-
Experience fatigue with their current progressive lenses
