2. Nikon E-Life Pro Home & Office

Nikon's office lenses offers consistent vision distance and performance around the eye point and is calculated by the Nikon Optical Design Engine. It comes with three distance options - 3 metres, 2 metres and 1 metre around the eye point, for optimised and natural vision for the activities they spend most time on.

Nikon's office lenses are available in SunStyle (permanently tinted lenses) for those who need it primarily for outdoor use. For those who work both indoors and outdoors, Transitions Gen S, Transitions Color Touch and Transitions XTRActive options are available. There is a 1.74 index option for those needing thinner lenses. However, do note that certain combinations of lens options/indices/prescription may not be available, as with all lens brands. 

3. Varilux Immersia

A new design defined by three reference points, corresponding to the most-used viewing distances in our immediate surroundings

Varilux Immersia is available in Airwear (polycarbonate lens material at 1.59 index), which is impact resistant. This is a good option for sports, high-impact activities or for safety glasses for certain occupations. Choose from 1.5 metre or 3 metre working distance options.

4. Shamir Computer/Workspace

Shamir's office lens (Computer/Workspace) series offers near zone visual comfort when using computers & desktop, as well as a wide, comfortable viewing field for reading. This enables the wearer to have more ergonomic viewing postures to avoid neck or back strains over time.

Shamir's office lenses are available with Transitions Gen S or Transitions XTRActive options. There is an additional top-up to Shamir's Inotime service - an express service where your new premium lenses can be ready in as fast as 4 hours or the same working day*. This is a great option for tourists or those in urgent need of office lenses. However, do note that Inotime express service is subject to availability of your required lens type and is subject to a daily cut-off time and is not available on weekdays, public holidays or special dates.

So, what's actually different between them?

When comparing office lenses, it's easy to focus on the brand name or assume that one design must simply be better than another.

But that's not really how these lenses should be evaluated.

The more useful questions are:

1. How far do you normally work?

Is your primary working distance your monitor, laptop, documents, or a mixture of several distances?

2. How often do you change between distances?

Someone who spends most of the day looking at one monitor may have different requirements from someone who is constantly moving between a screen, documents and people around the room.

3. How much near vision do you need?

Some people spend considerable time reading or doing detailed close-up work. Others mainly need intermediate vision for screens.

4. How much room do you have to move your head and eyes?

The usable visual field and how the design distributes vision can affect how you interact with your workspace.

5. What is your prescription and near addition?

The same lens design can behave differently depending on the wearer's prescription and visual requirements.

6. How will the lens be fitted?

Frame choice, fitting height, positioning and other fitting parameters can all matter when working with more specialised lens designs.

Is one office lens better than another?
